What is Hoodia?
Biologically speaking, Hoodia is a group of plants within the flowering plants family. It contains several species among which Hoodia gordonii. It can reach up to 1m high and present exuberant flowers, often with flesh color and strong smell. Typically found in the Namib Desert, ranging from Central Namibia to southern Angola, especially in plains and rocky areas. After being, commercially, "too famous", Hoodia plants have been protected in many countries.
A bit history about Hoodia Gordonii:
Hoodia has been used for generations by the indigenous tribesmen of Southern Africa, who infrequently use these plants for treating indigestion, small infections and to stave off hunger during long hunting expeditions.A pharmaceutical attempt to isolate Hoodia extracts, to be used as an appetite suppressant, was performed by Phytopharm together with drug giant Pfizer. But due to scientific difficulties, Pfizer stopped developing active ingredient of Hoodia.
In December 2004 Unilever and Phytopharm agreed to start marketing Hoodia gordonii commercially in the form of shakes and diet bars.
Lack of scientific evidence or regulatory approval have not stopped dietary supplement companies from marketing Hoodia gordonii extracts with claims that it can lower blood pressure and reduce the appetite.
