Meridia  Review - Reductil Review

Sibutramine, Meridia & Reductil, what relation?

Sibutramine (marketed as Meridia Diet Pill in the USA, Reductil Diet Pill in Europe), is an orally administered agent used to treat very overweight (obese) patients who have not been able to lose weight using a low calorie diet and exercise. It is a centrally acting stimulant chemically related to amphetamines. Sibutramine is classified as a Schedule IV controlled substance in the United States.

Sibutramine Manufacturer:

Sibutramine's manufacturer is Abbott Laboratories.

Sibutramine (Meridia & Reductil) Pharmacological aspects

Sibutramine (Meridia & Reductil) acts by increasing serotonin and norepinephrine levels in the brain. The serotonergic action, in particular, is thought to influence appetite. Despite its actions upon the neurotransmitters, sibutramine has never demonstrated any antidepressant properties. It was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in November 1997 for the treatment of obesity.

Meridia / Reductil Contraindications

Meridia and Reductil are contraindicated in:

  • Psychiatric conditions as bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa, serious depression or preexisting mania
  • Patients with a history of or a predisposition to drug or alcohol abuse
    Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Patients below 18 years of age
  • Concomitant treatment with a MAO inhibitor, antidepressant or other centrally active drugs, particular other anoretics
  • Hypertension that is not sufficiently controlled (caution in controlled hypertension)
  • Existing pulmonary hypertension
  • Existing damage on heart valves, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, serious arrhythmias, previous myocardial infarction
  • Stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland)
  • Closed angle glaucoma
  • Seizure disorders
  • Enlargement of the prostate gland with urinary retention
  • Pheochromocytoma
  • Pregnant and lactating women

Meridia - Reductil  Side effects

Reductil and Meridia frequently encountered side effects are: dry mouth, paradoxically increased appetite, nausea, strange taste in the mouth, anorgasmia and delayed ejaculation, upset stomach, constipation, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, menstrual cramps/pain, headache, flushing, or joint/muscle pain.
Sibutramine (Meridia & Reductil ) can substantially increase blood pressure and pulse in some patients. Therefore all patients treated with sibutramine should have regular monitoring of blood pressure and pulse.
The following Reductil and Meridia side effects are infrequent but serious and require immediate medical attention: cardiac arrhythmias, paresthesia, mental/mood changes (e.g., excitement, restlessness, confusion, depression, rare thoughts of suicide).
Reductil and Meridia symptoms that require urgent medical attention are seizures, problems urinating, abnormal bruising or bleeding, melena, hematemesis, jaundice, fever and rigors, chest pain, hemiplegia, abnormal vision, dyspnea and edema.
Currently, no Reductil or Meridia case of pulmonary hypertension has been noted, although related compounds (such as Fen-Phen) have shown this rare but clinically significant problem.

Sibutramine (Meridia & Reductil) Interactions

Reductil / Meridia has a number of clinically significant interactions. The concomitant use of sibutramine (Reductil and Meridia) and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs, such as selegiline) is not indicated, as it may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a somewhat rare but serious adverse drug reaction. Sibutramine (Reductil and Meridia) should not be taken less than two weeks after stopping or before starting use of an MAOI. Taking both sibutramine and certain medications used in the treatment of migraines—such as ergolines and triptans—, as well as opioids, may also increase the risk for serotonin syndrome, as may the use of more than one serotonin reuptake inhibitor at the same time.
The concomitant use of sibutramine (Reductil and Meridia) and drugs which inhibit CYP3A4, such as ketoconazole and erythromycin, may increase plasma levels of sibutramine. Sibutramine has no effect on the efficacy of oral contraceptives.

Meridia / Reductil Dosage

10 mg once daily (usually in the morning), if this proves insufficient the dose may be increased to 15 mg daily after 4 weeks.

Meridia / Reductil Safety concerns

Studies are ongoing into reports of sudden death, heart failure, renal failure and gastrointestinal problems. Despite a petition by Ralph Nader-founded NGO Public Citizen, the FDA made no attempts to withdraw the drug, but was part of a Senate hearing in 2005. Similarly, Dr. David Graham, FDA "whistleblower", testified before a Senate Finance Committee hearing that sibutramine may be more dangerous than the conditions it is used for.

Sibutramine (Reductil and Meridia) Interference With Cognitive and Motor Performance

Although sibutramine (Reductil and Meridia) did not affect psychomotor or cognitive performance in healthy volunteers, any CNS active drug has the potential to impair judgment, thinking or motor skills.

MERIDIA Diet Pill Information For Patients

Physicians should instruct their patients to read the patient package insert before starting therapy with MERIDIA and to reread it each time the prescription is renewed.
Physicians should also discuss with their patients any part of the package insert that is relevant to them. In particular, the importance of keeping appointments for follow-up visits should be emphasized.
  • Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they develop a rash, hives, or other allergic reactions.
  • Patients should be advised to inform their physicians if they are taking, or plan to take, any prescription or over-the-counter drugs, especially weight-reducing agents, decongestants, antidepressants, cough suppressants, lithium, dihydroergotamine, sumatriptan (Imitrex®), or tryptophan, since there is a potential for interactions.
  • Patients should be reminded of the importance of having their blood pressure and pulse monitored at regular intervals.

MERIDIA Diet Pill and Pregnancy

No adequate and well controlled studies with MERIDIA® (sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate) Capsules have been conducted in pregnant women. The use of MERIDIA during pregnancy is not recommended. Women of child-bearing potential should employ adequate contraception while taking MERIDIA. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during therapy.

MERIDIA Diet Pill and Nursing Mothers

It is not known whether sibutramine or its metabolites are excreted in human milk. MERIDIA is not recommended for use in nursing mothers. Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they are breast-feeding.

MERIDIA Diet Pill Pediatric Use

The safety and effectiveness of MERIDIA in pediatric patients under 16 years of age have not been established.

MERIDIA Diet Pill DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

The recommended starting dose of MERIDIA® (sibutramine hydrochloride monohydrate) Capsules is 10 mg administered once daily with or without food. If there is inadequate weight loss, the dose may be titrated after four weeks to a total of 15 mg once daily. The 5 mg dose should be reserved for patients who do not tolerate the 10 mg dose. Blood pressure and heart rate changes should be taken into account when making decisions regarding dose titration.
Doses above 15 mg daily are not recommended. In most of the clinical trials, MERIDIA was given in the morning.
Analysis of numerous variables has indicated that approximately 60% of patients who lose at least 4 pounds in the first 4 weeks of treatment with a given dose of MERIDIA in combination with a reduced-calorie diet lose at least 5% (placebo-subtracted) of their initial body weight by the end of 6 months to 1 year of treatment on that dose of MERIDIA. Conversely, approximately, 80% of patients who do not lose at least 4 pounds in the first 4 weeks of treatment with a given dose of MERIDIA do not lose at least 5% (placebo-subtracted) of their initial body weight by the end of 6 months to 1 year of treatment on that dose. If a patient has not lost at least 4 pounds in the first 4 weeks of treatment, the physician should consider reevaluation of therapy which may include increasing the dose or discontinuation of MERIDIA.

My name is Jennifer Thomson and i would like to show you my personal experience with Meridia.

I am 24 years old. Have been on Meridia for 3 days now. Not worried about reports of heart attacks with no other history...if you are over weight then you are at risk for heart problems at any time!! I have already lost a little over 3lbs and plan on continuing to take until i lose about 15. I have added exercise and better eating habits.

I have experienced some of these side effects-
slightly jittery, sleepy but can't sleep well...this have already started to dissipate

I hope this information will be useful to others,
Jennifer Thomson

I'm on meridia 15mg at the moment (2nd week) actually finding it difficult to eat, lost 9 pounds already...too fast really but I'm sure a few pounds will be water weight.

The only side effect I've had are felling a little 'spaced' out and insomnia, managed 4 hours sleep a night maximum so far.

Hope that helps

Anyone on meridia (reductil) ? what happened to you?

Anonymous said...

I took it, nothing special. When I was on it, slightly less apetitie. When I forgot to take it, I turned into a hungry monster. I couldnt believe I was eating so much, like way more then before I used the product, kinda crazy....

But anyways, didnt affect my blood pressure or anything. Didnt make me jittery, etc.... But I'm young, so maybe thats why.

I think you need to consider this before you use anything. Its not about getting the weight off, anyone can do that. Its about keeping it off. You cant take meridia forever, keep that in mind. What it all comes down to is your diet and exercise, because if you want to keep the weight off, you need to have a clean diet and exercise 4x a week or so.

I think you should start losing weight naturally, and when you cant lose anymore naturally, use something like meridia.

Hi.
Does anyone know of a cheap place to get Reductil / meridia tablets? A work colleague of mine got some on prescription from her GP and its amazing how its worked! Unfortunately, although there is not a great deal of difference in size/weight/height etc between her and me, she has a different doctor and mine refuses to give me any, saying that I dont need it. Not that I want to contradict my GP, but I feel that I am old enough and wise enough to allow myself to make this kind of assessment for myself. I was looking at trying xenical, but she and others have warned me against it....So, does anyone know where I might get hold of some for a reasonable cost?

Anonymous said...

You can buy them on the internet. They are powerful drugs and can play havoc with the digestive system leading to severe 'runs' and stomach pain.
You are old enough to make your own decisions but remember that the health service may well end up having to treat you for more serious problems and you could end up seriously ruining your health.
I'm sure there is an alternative for you out there, somewhere.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I have used Meridia, it works pretty good, but you still have to watch what you eat, and exercise, if not it won't work, plus you have to have your blood pressure checked once a month. One of my Dr's says it is good for you, the other won't prescribe it, just two doctors opinions.

I am just wondering if anyone else has taken Meridia and would like to know when it starts to work? Is it the kind that takes a couple of days for it to go through you system or is it right away? I have only taken it for two days and really feel like they pills are not working? I know they help with suppressing your appetite, so I was just wondering when that might kick in.
Thanks everyone.

I am currently taking Meridia. I have taken it for 4 months and have lost 20 lbs. I have to say that at first, I had the same reaction. I did not feel that it worked. Honestly, I still feel that way a lot of the time. BUT, think about it, I have lost 20 lbs. so it must be doing something! I agree with everything else out there that states you have to change your eating habits and exercise. I have always eaten "healthy", well balanced diet, not a lot of sweets, not a lot of carbs, lots of chicken and veggies, etc. I have always tried to get at least 20 min. of activity a day (walking or whatever). My problem was the amount I ate.

I thought that Merdia would just make me not eat. Not true. What it has done for me is make me realize that I was eating too much, even if it was healthy! With Meridia, I still get hungry, but I am able to say no to food and choose to only put half of the amount of food on my plate than I normally would. Also, my doc told me that 3500 calories = 1 pound. He said if you just cut out 500 calories a day, you would lose 1 pound a week. Now that makes sense and sounds doable! Also, I do make it a point (frozen meals can be costly, but it works) to eat a granola bar for breakfast or slim fast shake (180 calories) and a frozen meal at lunch (Smart Ones are my fav. - fill me up and taste really good - average 300 calories). That's only 480 calories so far! Then I feel fairly comfortable eating a sensible but good dinner. He said that I was probably eating 1800 calories a day, and that if I wanted to loose weight to cut that by at least 500 calories a day. So, I try to keep my max for the day 1200. I am way to lazy to count calories, ( hince the dedication to granola bars and frozen meals), but I at least try to be concious of it. Somehow it just clicked. Just being concious of it, makes a difference for me. Seriously, just about the time I get frustrated and say that I haven't lost any weight for the month, I seem to somehow loose a couple of pounds in a week. I seem to average about 5 lbs. a month. I know, I know, doesn't seem like much. I can't complain though, at least I'm losing it!

I do want to stress too that when I don't walk or do some sort of exercise for 20 to 30 minutes a few times a week, I really see no difference in weight loss. I do think that the exercise is a real boost and that if I were to do more of it, I would really see the true benefits of Meridia.

I started out on 10mg a day. Every time I went for my blood pressure check everything was fine, so I asked my doc to up my dose to 15mg a day. So far, so good.

Good luck and I really hope this helps. Don't lose faith. It will work if you work too. I'm assuming that you hit a point of desperation (I know I did) in order to go to your doc and start taking an RX to lose weight. Just make that switch turn in your head that this is the time to really see what your made of and what you can accomplish with a little help. I'm almost sure you can do it. Sometimes I feel that my weight loss is due to my changes and choices, not the drug (but I'm not willing to find out just yet :)

Good LUCK!

PS Started out at 183, now at 163 (wow what a difference in my face that makes)!

How much Meridia do you need for it to be effective?

Anonymous said...

You need to take it for almost a year and even then the weight loss is minimal

Anonymous said...

I just got mine. I took my first pill today. How long does it take to work? And how much weight can I expect to lose in about, 2 months, maybe 3? Just curious. How much did you lose on the Meridia pill, and how long did it take you to lose that amount? And does anyone have any suggestions on what to eat to lose weight? Thank you! :)

Anonymous said...

5 lbs in 1 month

Anonymous said...

Meridia doesn't work. there are no magic pills to lose weight just old fashioned had work and eating the right foods. Don't waist your time or money when your going to end up having to start over again eating right and exercising.

Anonymous said...

What makes Xenical and Meridia prescribed and different from OTC diet pills?
Why so special if both prescribed and OTC are meant to do the same, appetite suppressants?

Anonymous said...

Meridia is different from the older drugs, however, because its interaction with the brain is more localized. While Fen-Phen released serotonin into the bloodstream where it flooded and damaged the heart, Meridia acts only on localized areas of the brain where the serotonin chemical is needed. People taking Meridia or considering Meridia should be aware that Meridia is part of a healthy lifestyle choice, not merely an easy road to diet street.

I am currently taking Meridia prescribed by my MD. I am considering a weight loss clinic that prescribes 35mg. Phendimetrazine to be taken 3 times daily. Which would be achieve weight loss faster, Merida, Phendimetrazine alone or both? Obviously I don't want to OD!

Anonymous said...

i would say that since both of these are weight loss medicines with ephedrines in them (or some form of them) i would not advise taking them together. it looks like according to those, there would be an interaction.

Anonymous said...

My doctor is considering prescribing me meridia for weight loss is this good or is there something better? I read a few reviews of the side effects and am a little concerned she mentioned this one and another one she might put me on but I cant remember the name of the other one I was just wondering if there was another weight loss pill that maybe didn't have as harsh of side effects.
I used to way 175 and I decided I didn't want to be that miserable anymore I would just eat subway no condiments, and smoothie king I was working out several hours a day swimming, light weights lots of reps, eliptical for 45 min. I got down to 130 slowly decreased the exercise to get to maintenance and watched what I ate I went up to 135-140. I was comfortable with that because I am latina naturally curvy, hips, thighs etc. Well I managed to stay there for two years in august of last year is was like I hit a wall I went from 140 to weighing 200 lbs. by december. I have been increasing my work out cutting carbs, no sodas, I have been cycling 3 days aweek for 2 hrs and hicking 2 days a week for 3 hrs. I am slightly feeling results I eat 3 solid meals a day it is hard to count calories because my boss buys me breakfast usually from MCD's so I get the fruit and yogurt parfait, I usually do a salad for lunch with low fat or fat free. and for dinner I try to grab a meat with some veggies.

I have gained weight due to a thyroid issue and have a horrible time losing weight. Meridia's side effects are horrible. They weren't worth it to me. Ask about a diuretic (water pill prescription), get plenty of exercise and drink water. It will be a slower process but it's better than not making it to the bathroom in time.

How well does the weight loss pill Meridia work? Are there any concerns besides possible high blood pressure?

Anonymous said...

It really is all about calories in and calories out. Taking something like Meridia is unnecessary. Eat a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.

meridia (sibutramine) is said to increase blood pressure why? what happens ?

Meridia and reductil are both amphetamine-like drugs and have effects similar to adrenaline. both increase heart rate.

I'm on my 2nd mth of meridia and have lost 17lbs already. I also started going to the gym and I've bought the yoga booty ballet which is great for cardio. I've cut my calories to 1500 a day and I'm able to do so with the pills. The meridia cost so much money I'm thinking of trying Phentermine, which is about $100 dollars cheaper and I've heard good things about it also. Good luck!

I just started to take meridia. I can only excersice twice a week to do fibro. I am also diabetica nd have hosimotes. So weight loss is very difficult to me. What are so of the side effects u have experienced. The best time to take it and has it worked.

Anonymous said...

Will taking Meridia make me drug test positive for amphetamines or methamphetamines?

As long as you provide a complete list of all your Rx meds, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I haven't heard about Meridia doing that

Anonymous said...

Where can i buy meridia without a prescription?

Anonymous said...

Prescriptions are called such for a reason. There not simply intended to keep u away from the goodies. Some severe complications can develop if you get on meridia without adequate supervision. Blood Pressure issues, dizziness and other neurological problems.

for the last 3 months i took meridia 15 mg , lost 20 pounds and still I am losing , now the loss is taking more time cause my body is almost near being perfect ( i have still 12 pounds to lose) .. I don't know how long should i continue taking it .. the only side effect i have is that i sometimes get very alert and unable to sleep more than 5 to 6 hours, i usually sleep 8..

How to buy meridia online without perscription? Does anyone know any websites to buy meridia online without perscription?

Anonymous said...

I started taking Meridia at 155 lbs, I'm only 5 feet tall so I was technically obese with a BMI of just over 30. Now that I'm at 130 and very close to my goal of 120, is it okay to still take it? Anyone ever hear anything about this? I've been getting SO tired lately and I wonder if it has anything to do with it.

Has anyone out there ever taken a pill every other day? I missed two days in a row once and got a terrible headache and was SO tired. I'm thinking I'l need to wean myself off slowly.

No I don't put my medical health completely in the hands of the internet, I'm just curious if anyone has any experience with this.

Thanks!

I took Meridia last summer for about 9 weeks. It worked great along with exercise (if you take the meds alone it will not do much for you as my doctor told me.) I lost about 23 lbs over the period of 9 weeks and did not have any side effects aside from being thirsty, but I just drank lots of water. If you have high blood pressure it is not recommended to take Meridia since it can make it go even higher. I highly recommend it as a short term aid in weight loss for any otherwise healthy individual.

Which pill is better for losing weight phendimetrazine or meridia?

Anonymous said...

Let's see, do you want to die from a heart attack or a stroke? Exercise and cutting back on "junk" will do it!

I would say diet and exercise forget the pill. With anything you should aways see your physician before starting a diet or exercise program of any kind.

There are no quick fix pills. If there were, you wouldn't even have to ask this question because it would be all over the news about how good the product was.

Eat less and move more. That's it plain and simple. I have tried everything else and there is no way around it.

By the way, I tried Meridia about 4 years ago and did not lose an ounce! I never changed my eating habits.

Anonymous said...

why dont you try exercising and eating a carrot instead of looking for that quick fix

Have you taken meridia and if so how long did it take to work? Does it suppress your appetite? Please don't tell me to do it the natural way and excercise and eat right because I am doing that as well. Thanks alot.

Yes, it works great, even better then phentermine for me. Dense low calorie foods work the best with any weight loss drug and/or diet. Meaning foods that dont have a lot of calories that take a lot of space such as lettuce.

Anonymous said...

I have taken this pill and it is wonderful. I had no side effects, i.e. higher blood pressure. I had to go into the doctor once a month to make sure of this. I lost 50 lbs in 4 months and have kept it off 3 years after stopping Meridia. It is a great pill, and is not gimmicky. It gives you a chance to lose weight. I did add some exercise and somewhat healthier eating habits to it. Do not listen to people who say its a gimmick. It worked and has for thousands. The one downside to Meridia is the cost. For 15mg (i recommend this strenght) it cost $135 for 30 pills. If you can afford it, its worth it.

There should not be a problem taking phentermine with synthroid, I don't know why your doctor wont prescribe it. Do a simple search and you will see that many people who are on synthroid take phentermine to lose weight with no problems. Meridia works well, but keep in mind it costs much more also. But I have used both and I probably did better on meridia

I'm trying to lose weight, and i am on meridia. I have been eating less then 1200 calories.? I'm guessing this is bad. However I'm very overweight. I'm 5'1" and 165lbs and i need to lose weight. I'm trying to lose 3 lbs a week any suggestions?

Anonymous said...

First, I'm not a nutritionist, doctor or one who is professionally trained in weight loss. There are several factors to consider. First, your age is important. The younger you are, the easier it is to lose. *Around 30 yrs. old it gets tougher to lose the weight, and in your 40's it's harder.* The other factor is caloric intake. Your goal is to eat around 1200-1800/day eating small meals throughout the entire day. Not just breakfast at 7, lunch at 12 and dinner at 6. Snack in between your regular meals like almonds, apples, pears, carrots or snack bars. Smaller portions is key with the exception of breakfast or lunch.

Anonymous said...

You need to exercise and eat when your hungry and stop when your full. Im guessing with all the calorie restricting your having low energy. Limit ur calories about 500 from ur healthy calorie intake (google it) and then exercise 30 min 5 times a week (i suggest a fast walk, jamming to your ipod).

Has anyone tried reductil really? was it successful? did you have any side-effects?

I was on it for about six months. I found that it did cure the hunger but I still had to have the will power to say no to food, as I discovered that I used to eat food for the sake of eating it and not because I needed it. However I did have to come off of it as it sent my blood pressure sky high. If you give it a go good luck!!!

I just started taking reduciil today. My friend has lost 6 stone in under a year and my other friend 1 stone in 2 weeks.I have had to stop taking my anti depressants today which i have been on 4 8 years so i am expecting to feel a bit off at first.I didn't feel hunger pangs today but still ate but not as much.I feel a bit sick as well and moody.I have heard loads of people have lost weight with them and when you go to the loo....oil,grease..fat...is supposed to float on top of your stools.I have not been yet.Its so expensive to buy on line but i got it free as i am on the n.h.s.anyway that's all i know so far hope i helped.

i started using reductil last wednesday, and it's been fine so far. the first night i had a little trouble sleeping, but i've had a lot more energy and haven't snacked at all, pretty much. You do need a prescription for it though, it isn't available over the counter. Originally i was interested in duromine, but my doctor said that he doesn't prescribe it anymore as it's addictive, and he's noticed that everyone he prescribes it to loses a lot of weight and then gains it all back, plus more. I wouldn't touch it if i were you. I've lost 3 and a half kilos already after only being on the reductil for 3 days.

I know Reductil side effects, but need to lose more kgs, Does Reductil really work?

Anonymous said...

I do know people who have been on the tablets and yes they worked BUT they have put ALL the weight back on and some have put more on. I struggle with diets all the time but I don`t think they are the answer.

Anonymous said...

Trouble is though drugs like Reductil work in trials their success in the community is very poor indeed. In fact 2 in 3 pill dieters seem to end up heavier!(University of California study 2007).

Diet + exercise seems to be the only option offering any real chance or working.

I've started to take Reductil since two weeks ago but haven't lost any weight. I take the combination of antidepressent pills: Zoloft, Epilim, and Lamictal at the same, do they interfere with Reductil??
Or is it because I've lost 13 pounds in one month and have reached the weight plateau?

i started taking reductil 2 weeks ago as well, i seem to have lost 3 kilos. it has killed my cravings for chocolate and fast food and i seem to be satisfied with 3 small meals and 2 snacks a day with no junk food
My doc told me reductil was an anti depressant and no other anti depressant should be taken with them. I am not on any anti depressants so that i can't tell you

I have been on Meridia for four days. I took it for two months about a year ago. The first time I mainly had the side effect of Dry Mouth. This time I just CAN NOT sleep. Is it normal to have different side effects the first time compared to the second? I know it's only my 4th day...do you think the side effects will become more regulated? I'm hardly able to sleep more than an hour or two w/ out waking up. I've started taking it earlier and earlier in the day...even though the pharmicist suggested to take it before bed. I have a 3 year old and am a single mom going back to school 30hrs a week...I need some sleep...lol

any advice, suggestions, tips, or personal experience you'd like to share would be hugely appreciated.

hi there, i think you maybe thinking too much about trying to get to sleep which does make you anxious. try not to worry too much about your side effects. before bed try and relax abit in the bath, have a horlicks.

I have taken it in the past. I loved it. I lost about 45 pounds in 8 months. (I only took the drug for 5 months) I did gain a little at first when I went off it, but then I was able to lose it, and pretty consistently lost the rest. I have keep it off for almost 2 years now!

Good luck!

Meridia & Prozac? Can these 2 be taken together. I am taking 20 mg of prozac and another doctor just prescribed 15 mg of meridia. I noticed the pharmacy print out stated the 2 can interact. My doctors office is closed right now so i can't call. The pharmacist said there shouldn't be a problem with this combination because the dosage is not that high. I definitely won't take the meridia until i speak to my doctor tomorrow but i was wondering if anyone else takes an anti-depressant along with meridia and if there were any side effects and did the meridia help you lose weight?

Did anybody use Meridia pills for loosing weight?

meridia is safe...safer than any weight loss drug out there...the first time I used this drug was 7 years ago after the birth of my first child, my doctor perscribed it to me because he knew I was active in my work - and it paid off and I lost 70 pounds. after another baby and a few years and a thyroid issue I asked him to put me on it again, since being on it since the second week of october, i've lost 11 pounds. the key is being active!! it makes you feel like you are full and if you listen to your body, you know the next morning that when you step on the scale that it will be a great sign!! side effects are mostly dry mouth and a little jitterness, make sure you get your blood pressure checked once a month or go to your nearest drug store and check it from time to time....it really IS EXPENSIVE but i have taken granola bars to eat at lunch instead of going out, and it off-sets the cost!! it really is worth a try if your an active person needing a little push!!!

If your way overweight or older, you definitely should not touch this stuff. I took it and lose weight, but dont think its just about taking it and losing weight. You need to diet and exercise at the same time. You need to watch what you eat and do cardio a few times a week or more.

No one can tell you how long it takes. It all depends on your body (genetics, metabolism, etc...) and your diet and cardio. Some people lose 3 pounds a week, others dont lose anything.

I didnt notice any side effects, but it has killed some people. So if your really obese or have a weak heart, this isnt for you.

For those of you that have tried meridia, how much weight have you lost? also, how does it make you feel, and what if any, were the side effects?

I had been taking Meridia (Sibutramine) 15mg for 10 days when I decided that it was not the drug for me (didnt like the side effects, other stuff) so i subsequently stopped it. Today, my doctor prescribed me Zoloft, and she said that I could take them right away?

Its been exactly 7 days since I last took my dosage of Meridia, and my doctor said it was fine that it was already out of my system.....but I thought you had to wait two weeks?

Anyways, Im waiting two weeks to take it, but I was just curious if this was true.....also, did anyone else get any withdraw symptoms from stopping Meridia?

I DON'T THINK SHE HAD ANY SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS.

Hi there.I was on Reductil but had to stop taking it as it was giving me really bad headaches and used to set off my migraines. The dizziness and sicky feeling do stop after a few days when your body gets used to the tablet. It can sometimes cause constipation so make sure you eat a lot of things in your diet to help this. You may need to take some headache tablets but you are doing the right thing of drinking a lot of water. If you need anymore info let me know. The pills do work so if you can find a way to get rid of the headaches and continue taking you will notice a difference.Good luck

From Meridia and Reductil diet pill review above:

Frequently encountered Meridia and Reductil side effects are: dry mouth, paradoxically increased appetite, nausea, strange taste in the mouth, anorgasmia and delayed ejaculation, upset stomach, constipation, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, menstrual cramps/pain, headache, flushing, or joint/muscle pain.

so what you are experiencing is one of possible Meridia and Reductil side effects.

I am just now starting to take Meridia. I am 5'10 and in pretty good shape but I want to lose 5 to 10 lbs and I can't seem to shake it. I do an hour of cardio every morning, and kind of watch what I eat, keeping it healthy but not really dieting. I am hopeful that Meridia will help me feel less desire to snack...I am hungry ALL of the time, but eat small quantities and am stuffed...for an hour or so and then I am ravenously hungry again.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? Was Meridia effective for reducing the snack drive? I have put on that 5-10 lbs over the past year and am about to turn 40. I want to get it under control before I look back from 45 and see 10lbs a year and an extra 50lbs riding on my backside!

Thanks

I have been on it for 8 days now and I am telling you I LOVE IT! I have NO side effects except I am satisfied with less food. I am sticking to a healthy diet plan. (Low fat no junk food) it takes a few days to start working and everyone is different.
A friend has lost 35 lbs and looks great! I am on 10 milligrams daily.
Just make sure your Blood pressure stays normal.Keep all appointments with your doctor. By the way, Meridia is only for people whose BMI is over 30!

My doctor wants to prescribe it after some bloodwork and I want to hear testimonials from those who are on it. My doc said I was a prime candidate since I overeat often and exercise. I need to lose approximately 80 pounds to get back to my healthy weight zone that I was in 9 years ago before I married. That's when I started my progressive gains. I've lost weight before. I lost over 40 pounds twice during a weight loss contest at work but gained it back as soon as the contest ended. I would love to hear from those who can tell me what to expect. Also, I don't need links on Meridia. I have read the wikipedia and other info online about the risks to higher blood pressure and other side effects. I'm only want to hear from those on it. Thanks

which is more efficient meridia or reductil pill? what about meridia reductil side effects if any?

Anonymous said...

Both Meridia & Reductil diet pills are Sibutramine.
Sibutramine is marketed as Meridia in the USA and Reductil in Europe.

Meridia & Reductil side effects are:
- dry mouth, paradoxically increased appetite, nausea, strange taste in the mouth, anorgasmia and delayed ejaculation, upset stomach, constipation, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, menstrual cramps/pain, headache, flushing, or joint/muscle pain.

- Meridia & Reductil can substantially increase blood pressure and pulse in some patients. Therefore all patients treated with Meridia & Reductil should have regular monitoring of blood pressure and pulse.

- The following Meridia & Reductil side effects are infrequent but serious and require immediate medical attention: cardiac arrhythmias, paresthesia, mental/mood changes (e.g., excitement, restlessness, confusion, depression, rare thoughts of suicide).
Symptoms that require urgent medical attention are seizures, problems urinating, abnormal bruising or bleeding, melena, hematemesis, jaundice, fever and rigors, chest pain, hemiplegia, abnormal vision, dyspnea and edema.

I've taken my 1at 10 ml dose of Meridia today and all was well. I had no dry mouth, no spacy feeling. I wasn't hungry. Then around 8 hours later I started having chest pains. My BP and pulse was normal. The pain didn't radiate anywhere. It was just in the center of my chest. Two hours later I feel slightly better. I did not have shortness of breath of any of the other bad symptoms. I don't want to stop after one day. I think this is a fluke. I read so much on the side affects I probably just freaked myself out. I'm 5'2" and weigh 160. I need some help and this seems like the way to go. I took Adipex before with no problems but it didn't work very well. I do take Provigil, Klonipin and Restoril for sleep, but they haven't seemed to affect anything yet.

I am an American in Europe. I started taking Reductil which is the same as Meridia on Oct 1, 2009. I have lost 13lbs to date. Initially I just found that it helped me stop when I was satisfied, not stuffed with food. I could say to myself, I've had enough and could stop eating. Some days I would cook dinner for my family and nibble while cooking and then I didn't want to eat once dinner was ready. I work out about 4-5 times a week running about 10-15 miles per week, walking some and doing the eliptical some.

I have diagnosed high blood pressure. I am taking ramipril in 7.5mg doses as well as a diuretic to control my blood pressure. I weigh 240lbs.

This is my first experience with a drug. I lost weight without anything other than my will to do so and working out at the tune of 130lbs. I believe my age had a lot to do with my impending weight gain after a year of keeping it off. Natural methods just no longer work for me so I gave this a try as a last ditch effort.

I have been experiencing the insomnia but i am sleepy. I just can't get my mind quiet enough to sleep. I have also had this feeling of just not quite being present. It is not dizziness, just a strange feeling of not being grounded. Hard to explain. This might be due to lack of sleep.

That is my story so far. I would like to know if there are any people who are using this drug at 15mg and are more than 75-100lbs overweight. I tend to hear about the person that needs to drop 10-20lbs. I think drugs for that is ridiculous. But that is just my opinion. For those of us who have significant weight to lose, and will need to stay on the drug for several months to achieve that, will you talk to me? Have you seen a consistent decline in your weight from the drug or did you notice a point when it just didn't seem to give you the same results? Is there a point when the drug stops being useful. Are you on a specific diet plan? I will not go on a diet because I don't believe they work. It's necessary to change ones habits and the way you live in order to maintain weight loss. And even then, its a battle as with me. I don't eat processed foods. I avoid sugar. I eat lots of fiber in the form or gluten free and wheat free whole grains, fruit and veggies. I do not eat out more than 5 times a year. I cook my meals at home and know what I am eating. I work out. I am fat, but fit. Not many 240lb 5'6" women can run a 5k. I can without issue. yet, I gained weight and find it impossible to get rid of...thus the need for this drug.

I am really looking forward to your real life successes and failures as it relates to this. Perhaps we can help each other.

I just started takin meridia on Oct 11,2009 and in one weeks time I have dropped about 12 pounds. When I started taking meridia I weighted 310 pounds and now I am 298.I have had no side effects what so ever.I have reduced my caloric intake to about 800 calories a day ( which is easy because I am not really hungry anymore).I just want to say that people who are naturally thin or only have about 30 pounds to lose are waisting their money on meridia because with dietary changes they can accomplish weight loss.Me personally I could not shake the weight for nothing..Mind you I dont eat fried foods bread pasta sweets and im not a fan of soda.I stay away from carbs as much as possible.I take 10 mgs in the morning and at this point I dont excersize yet simply because I want to lose pounds before I tone them, muscle weighs more than fat, dont want to look like a sumo wrestler..lol. I drink about a gallon and a half of water a day and everything is wonderful. And lastly for thoes people who say just diet and workout please be quiet because most of you have only a few pounds to drop as a matter of fact I feel they comment to discredit this pill simply to keep the fat epidemic going and may even work for a diet drug competitor. Until you are seriously overweight yourself and have tried other remedies that DIDNT WORK dont cast judgement on thoes of us who have...thank you hope this helps someone

I took Reductil 10mg for 1 month as a kick start for weight loss and getting on track. The cost of Reductil without private health cover, is very expensive.

Side effects in the first few days included - dry mouth, feeling more upbeat than usual, increased energy, extreme appetite withdrawal, difficulty sleeping and lack of desire to sleep at all, loss of cravings for food and basically no desire for food at all, more active digestive system - not diarreah, but needing to go to the toilet almost immediately after eating.

After the first week, most of these side effects subsided, but for the remainder of the month on this medication I continued having trouble sleeping, could stay up until all hours of the night. Normally I am a heavy sleeper, but on Reductil the tiniest noise would wake me up and then it was nearly impossible to get back to sleep again. I had feelings of depression and just basically feeling flat. I got my period in the second week and it lasted for two weeks and I don't normally have my period at all as I have used depo provera for the past 6 years. Desire for food continued to remain minimal, and cravings hardly existent anymore. Bowel movement returned to normal. Two days throughout the month I forgot to take the medication and felt exactly the same as if I had taken it.

I lost 6kg (about 13 pound)in one month on Reductil.

About one week after no longer taking Reductil I began to feel normal again e.g. feeling depressed and flat and sleeping disturbances subsided. Appetite and cravings still remained under control though, as I guess I had become accustomed to controlled portions and making better choices about food after the first month.

That was three months ago. To date I have lost 25kg (55 pound).

Reductil gave me a kick start, helped me to get into the habit of better eating habits and allowed for some quick results that provided me with the motivation to continue on my own. Personally I do not think the side effects were worth while, however, if I had not done the month course of Reductil I am not sure how I would have gained the will power and motivation to stay focused on my own.

The additional two months of weight loss however, was acheived on my own through exercise - walking and exercise bike, everyday for at least 20 minutes, calorie counting, choosing better foods and portion control.

Face facts, there is no miracle cure. Reductil may assist some people but it is no magic cure. There is no magic cure. The only way (apart from surgery) to successfully lose weight and keep it off is to change your eating habits, not just for today or the week or the month, but for the rest of your life. Eat better, eat in moderation, eat smaller portions and get out there and get motivated however you can and you definitely will get results.

There is no miracle pill. Exercise and change of diet are the only solutions, remember that first.

I've been taking Meridia for off and on for several months and I have to say I'm very pleased. Even though it is pricey it works! Some of my side effects were stomach pain (if I over ate at one sitting), some dry mouth and heart burns. Nothing severe to the point where I would want to stop taking Meridia. I haven't gained any of the weight that I have lost. When I first started taking Meridia I was 210lbs. I was able to lose 15lbs and not gain it back, after stopping for about 6 months. Now I have started taking Meridia again again for about one month and I will continue to do so until I reach 170lbs. I see my Doctor once a month for my refills and lab work.
